Here’s a short film by some students at Georgia State about what happens when people obey the law. Granted, they may have gone a little over the top, but one has to make allowances if there’s a relevant point to be made. And it seems to me it’s relevant. Again, it comes back to our favorite question, who’s causing accidents and creating an unsafe transit environment: fast drivers or bad drivers?

Very good point shown by these guys. Now they need to go from NY to LA and see if they can do it without being arrested for obeying the law. Call the film 46Hours7Minutes. An excellent speed limit protest idea (or why do cops ticket randomly for going 5 over when one’s going at traffic speeds - protest idea).
I lived in Atlanta for 3 years and one of my roommates in college lost his license for going 81 on the same I-285 in this video. This is pretty accurate that you cannot possibly go the speed limit on that stretch of highway without nearly being run over or pulled over.
I know a guy in St. Louis who loved to go to work every morning, driving the speed limit in the fast lane just to piss people off. He came in one morning mad as hell because the Missouri H.P. gave him a ticket for doing that. Here in Missouri it is illegle to stay in the fast lane. Like the trooper said “what if an emergency vehicle needed the fast lane and you are blocking it?”
Actually, what they were doing was actually against the law; if you’re no passing you’re not supposed to be in the passing lane. They also crossed multiple lanes in one turn, that’s also illegal!
i got pulled once for going the speed limit on a highway. when we asked the officer why he pulled us over he said, “well everyone speeds on this road and you weren’t, i thought something might be wrong.” we were lost, or rather unsure where our turn was…still we laughed about that one for awhile.
I don`t know about US and A but here in the old world you can´t pass or go the same speed as the cars on your left- if you`re in the 1st lane you can`t pass a car in the 2nd lane, if you`re in the 2nd then you can`t pass cars in 3d lane and so on. Usually 1st lane is taken up by truckers, in this case cars basically cruise in the 2nd, faster cars overtaking them in 3d then going back to 2nd… 1 stupid idiot of thousand people sometimes cruises in 4th.. and gets stopped should he get caught.
Tonn
Yes he should.
People need to learn to pass when they are in the passing lane and that doesn’t mean going 1/2 mph faster than the car you are passing. Get in, overtake, and get out! I’ve been driving the same highway to work now for 15 years I can say the problem is not speed it is bad drivers. Just about every accident I’ve seen has been caused by a stupid maneuver followed by hard braking then the tailgater plows into the car in front.
I drive the same 150 mile streach and back between Williamsport and Clarion PA every weekend. I have wittnessed a couple of accidents. None of which the person responsible was speeding. One was in the winter time when a 18 wheeler lost control of his trailor when breaking, and the other was someone cutting another off and clipping them. I travel this streach at a decent speed each weekend. I have yet to get a ticket… gotta love radar dectectors and laser jammers. The way I see it is you may drive faster then the posted speed limit and still maintain control of your vehicle. I have no objections with speeding, however when it gets taken to the point where you loose control of your vehicle, then it becomes a problem. There should be a way to seperate the boys from men… so to say, so that we may get to where we need to be on our own time. Possibly some highway preformance driving courses…
The law should be changed! I think the point is well-made. Obeying the law is actually dangerous in this context. Societies and circumstances change and evolve - the law needs to do the same in order to remain useful and applicable.
In Texas, our speed limit is 70, even 80 in some places. Being set this high, most people end up sticking pretty close to it… around 75, some people will do 80 if in a hurry. It’s not true to argue that if the limit is raised, everyone will just do 5-10 over whatever the new limit is. I’d bet if the speed limit were 85, not too many people would break it. The point is people should drive at whatever speed they can drive the road they’re on comfortably, and in most cases, just about anyone can safely drive twice the speed limit. Speed limits should be determined by normal everyday drivers. Send them out for a drive on the road and let them drive naturally. Use whatever speed that ends up being as the limit, plus or minus a few mph depending on the road.
Great idea and good point.
However; everyone talking about why do we blame speeders, we dont do anything wrong…Simple answer: Because it’s easy to prove.
Speeding is easy to prove, whatever the radar/laser says goes (yes I know how radar works). If a Cop pulled me over for wreckless driving, driving too slow or over taking improperlly - it’s his word agasint mine, and he has nothing to prove his case with (unless video).
Simply, they blame speeding because it’s easy.
Great video. A little apprehensive at first, but the finale was spectacular!!
I ran across this video http://trafficwaves.org/trafexp.html about a year ago. I use this driving technique regardless of which lane I drive in. It has served me quite well. It’s absolutely amazing how infrequently I apply the brakes, and actually keep moving.
Maybe it’s the Embry-Riddle AeroNautical Unversity and Retired Navy sticker on my rear window, but my calm and measured approach to driving seem to spread like a wanted virus. I don’t remember the last time I got tailgated.
Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all.
if you can read this, thank a teacher; if you can still read it in English, you’re welcome.

Welcome to Floridahell. People never ever get out of the 3rd/2nd lane here, and none are taught that moving the same speed as other traffic is dangerous. I drive fast and with purpose, while Repulifuckians talk on a cell phone and tie traffic up for miles because nobody learns the proper rules of the road here.
My blood boils thinking about, I’m a professional delivery driver and I get paid to deliver merchandise and packages in a timely manner…
i remember when the speed limit in Montana was “reasonable and prudent” showing that the state had some faith in a persons judgment. i want those days back there were less highways fatalities when there was no speed limit although I’m not sure if that’s because of population increase or the speed limit. but 75mph when all i can see is strait interstate for the next 6 miles puts me to sleep
As a supporter of the idea of speed limits being abolished in America, I ahve to say I agree with what they were doing. Proves that a slower speed is actually more dangerous than a fast one. I actually almost got into an accident doing 2 over one day. In florida, most of the interstates are 70 MPH. I was coming back from work one day, had the cruise set to 72 MPH at like 9 at night, and all of a sudden, this cop comes speeding around this car from behind me, cuts me off and slams on his brakes, leaving me just enough time to get around him without hitting him. I left the cruise set, and he did it again. He did it about 2 more times before he got stuck behind a semi, at which point I bumped it up to 75 to get away from his crazy ass, which actually somehow worked.
I would realy like to have a list of all the detection units that were in that BMW , for my own car . ALLWAYS KEEPING ONE STEP AHEAD. YOU HAVE MY EMAIL PLEASE SEND ME A LIST THANKS! ONTARIO CANADA ——— KERRY
response to brent terry thats a myth the reason most adults say oh its ok the chp “california highway patrol” lets you go 5 over the limit and its not true the reason that they say that is because back in the day motorcycles were air cooled and they had to go fast so their motor wouldnt over heat but the was a longass time ago and now its gone but there are some exeptions for certain states
Very informative, this was just the information I was looking for. You are dead on the money.
